The main effect of aloe vera is in the large intestine, and it has no effect on promoting peristalsis of the small intestine in vitro.  Injecting aloe extract into dogs can increase the activity of dipeptidase in appropriate dose, but can inhibit it in high dose.  Due to the varying amounts of active ingredients in various aloe vera, pure aloe emodin has been suggested to replace aloe vera as a laxative
